types of graphic recorders | working of graphic recorders

today i will give you the complete information about types of graphic recorders working of this recorders and the advantages disadvantages of this graphic recorders

what is the recorders?

recorders is a measuring instrument of a instrumentation system which records or display the time varying quantity and signals for the analyse, inspecting, monitoring and the maintenance of the system.

In the vast industries there are many machines works continuously and there are some parameters like temperature, flow, voltage, pressure, current, power, etc. this parameters is hazardous at the some times to avoid the  accidents it is necessary to monitor and record of different conditions.

needs of the recorders

at some times for the research or investigate of the various parameters for the further operations or some  new experiments we have to need the previous readings or data at that time the recorders are useful 

this recorded data concludes or gives information of the device that where we have find the trouble in he system.

it helps to remove such faults

the recorded data of faults is used further for corrections, upgredation  and modifications in the system 

used for overall performance of plant

types of graphic recorders

  • strip chart recorder
  • X-Y recorder
  • circular chart recorder

1. strip chart recorder

strip chart recorder is the oldest method of recording the data in which the data is recorded on a chart paper which records the variation with respect to time therefore this method is also known as the graphic recorder.


In this diagram it shows that the basic block diagram of strip chart recorder device it consists of many aspects like 

  • chart paper that records the recordings on the paper like the ECG 
  • variation variables 
  • stylus it must have the type according to the measuring mechanism  
          1.ink filled stylus  2.heated stylus  3.chopper bars  4.electronic stylus 5.optical marking system        

  • range selector which is used for the range of the variables 
  • paper drive system
  • speed selector which normally controls the speed of paper or the drive
  • pendrive system for the information to be recorder
  • signal conditioners
  • servo motor

in the device any quantity to be record is firstly considered as the input signals this input signals further provided to the range selector this range selector select proper or useful range for the servomotor. to make the signal strong and clear or make it conditioning it transmits to the signal conditioner and the processed signals from the signal conditioner given to the servo motor by this input signals the servomotor rotates this rotational motion of servomotor is connected to the strip by the mechanical shaft and the strip is connected to the pen or the stylus

at the other hand the chart is provided here with the drive or pendrive and by the stylus or the marker the movement of strip is recorded on chart 

advantages of strip chart recorders

  • this method is less costly compared to the others
  • this method convenient to record time varying quantity
  • this is very easy to use and install
  • when the chart is moving to take readings we can change or maintain the speed of rotation
  • no limitation of the paper and the stylus in the system
  • large amount of sheets can be inserted at one time for getting the multiple readings
  • In this system more than one variable can be recorded

disadvantages of strip sheet recorder

  • it is not suitable for the proportional readings
  • mechanism of the system is complicated
  • given readings is not accurate
  • not easy to find the older data get by the system
  • it is less sensitive to record very small signals

2. x-y recorder

x-y recorder is the newly modified device of graphics recorded it records the relation between the two variables on the graph like the one physical quantity represents x-axis on the graph and the second one represents the y-axis on the graph

In this recorder system we record the variables this is the newly modified device of the strip chat recorder the sheet used in this device is specially designed 

on the chart first quantity shows horizontally and another quantity is arranged vertically 



as shown in the figure the two blocks are set on the positions shown in the fig. 

because of two quantity the strip in the x-y recorder and the chart bot moves that cause we get the relation between the two variables

there are two servomotors are connected one servomotor is connected to the strip and another is connected to the chart at the starting the input signal is given to the attenuator this attenuator tunes the input signals this tuned signals is send to the balance circuit which is controlled by the reference of external source then there is a channel provided between the balanced circuit and the amplifier for channelized the signals at any specific range further to amplify this signals it transmitted to the amplifier after this the process of servomotor gets i/p to rotate.

the rotation causes the relative motion between the strip and chart that motion gives the radiation between the two rotational quantity this strip and chart recorder are connected to the x-y terminals this strip and chart moves as their conveniency vertically and horizontally this movement causes the drawn recordings by the marker or pen provided at the strip.

like the strip sheet recorder this is also a oldest method of the recorders.

applications of x-y recorders

  • in industrial works to get the relation between the two variables 
  • to draw recordings of stress and strain, rest, temperature, characteristic.
  • to records the characteristic of motor like speed, torque, current etc.
  • to plot the regulation curves of power supply against time
  • records the electrical characteristic like resistance.

advantages of x-y recorder

  • we obtain recorded data in the graphical manner
  • we can plot two variables
  • electrical and non-electrical all type of  quantities can recorded

disadvantages of x-y recorder

  • power consumption is high as compare to strip sheet recorder because here we use two servomotor 
  • construction of this recorder is complicated 
  • cost of recorder is high

3. circular chart recorder

circular chart recorder is a graphical recorder in which the data is recorded in a flat circular sheet is mounted as shown in the fig. it consist of a measuring element and the operating mechanism, for recording the data there is a chart drive , recording pen for stability of the chart and for proper data recording the chart is mounting at the plane plate that is the chart plate

the chart is positionate by the springs clips as shown in the fig. measuring element is a helical pressure tube or any other element the motion is transformed from measuring element to the recording pen by the links A,B,C, that originated at the operating system of the device for the fitting and locked of the sheet there is the pen arm and the sheet must be driven at the uniform rate at the time indicator for recording the data drive assembly consists of center chart it is supported by spindle iron drive motor the chart and the chart mechanism is locked in the center spindle

for the the sheets various drive is used : 1.mechanical spin lock drive 2. numatic spin lock drive                                                                               3 .externally control lock drive 4.motor spring

again the circular chart recorders have two types 

1.single pen circular chart recorder 

2.dual pen circular chart recorder

applications of circular chart recorder

 circular chart recording instrument is used in many ways for multiple field like cleaning, industries, material industries some of this applications is as follows:

  • it is used for recording the ph and pressure 
  • used in the cleaning process
  • it records humidity and temperature
  • used for monitoring the liquid level
  • monitoring the data generated in testing, diagnostics, statistical, analysis

advantages of circular chart recorder

  • it gives the proper information at given period of time
  • it is modern instrument therefore it is more accurate 
  • the chart is designed for rotate in the standard time period
